Isabel Gomes ~ Artist Statement:
Each year I set aside a block of time to work on my personal portfolio. I choose to photograph with pinhole and plastic cameras because I am drawn to the simple elegance of these tools. There are no f~stops or light meters, and in the case of the pinhole, not even a viewfinder. There's just a sheet of film, patience and perseverance.
My work is influenced by the pioneers of photojournalism such as Henri Cartier Bresson and Andre Kertesz, who looked predominantly to form and "the decisive moment" as well as contemporary photographers such as Kieth Carter who view their photographs as symbols relating to poetry and mythology rather than a simple representation of the object itself.
In my work I seek to combine these two aspects. No medium can capture a fleeting instant like photography but at the same time I am looking for contrasts or meaning beyond the apparent. Each viewer can take for themselves what they see in these images.
